The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) has emerged as the second best polytechnic in Nigeria in the Webometrics ranking released in January.
By virtue of this, it thus became the best state Polytechnic in the country.
The institution came from fourth-best in the last ranking to emerge second in the latest one behind Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).
The news came as a cheering one for the polytechnic that has just been upgraded to a university.
Based on the ranking, LASPOTECH emerged as the best state-owned polytechnic in Nigeria. The institution also climbed to the 73rd position on the list of 280 higher institutions in the country on Webometrics. Webometrics is arguably the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions in the world. It based the grade on impact rank, openness rank and excellence rank, among others.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu last week assented to the bills passed by the House of Assembly converting LASPOTECH to Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST).
The Governor on Tuesday received a clearance certificate for the university from the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, in Abuja.
Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) Ikorodu is coming 39 years after the first state-owned varsity, Lagos State University, Ojo was established, making it the 57th state university and 205th in Nigeria.
