At least over 100 thugs Armed with AK-47 were arrested in Nsukka, Enugu State by the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
It was gathered that a combined team of security operatives, acting on information, arrested the thugs in the early hours of Saturday, 18 March 2023.
The Spokesman of NSCDC Enugu State Command, CSC Danny Iwuchukwu confirmed the arrest to newsmen in Enugu on Saturday.
Iwuchukwu added tha the arrest was made early in the morning of March 18, the Election Day, after an intelligent tip-off, at a popular hotel in Nsukka.
He said AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, which included: hand axes, clubs and hatchets were recovered from the political thugs.
According to Iwuchukwu , the suspected thugs arrested had been duly handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation.
Enugu has witnessed pockets of violence in the ongoing governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the state Police Command has said that there was no adverse security situation in the state so far in the ongoing polls.
The Spokesman of the Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe disclosed that the police in collaboration with sister security agencies had been pro-active.
“We have acted swiftly on every security tip-off relayed to us. The security agencies have remained pro-active and decisive so that the peace-loving people of Enugu State will surely cast their votes in a violence-free and fair manner devoid of intimidation or fear,” the state police spokesperson said.
