The 48th Excellence Award of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana event was rated to be a unique gathering that brought together past and present sports administrators, legends and stars across the country together.
Vice President of Ghana and flag bearer of New Patriotic Party in the December Presidential Election, Alhaji Dr Mamodu Bawumia was part of the very special guests at the event.
In his speech, the Vice President commended the Association for sustaining the unity of the sports community in the country for close to five decades. He said he has always enjoyed the reportage of the sports writers for many years.
He said they have always demonstrated passion for unity in the country regardless the differences in religion, political parties and even educational differences.
Enumerating the number of sports facilities that the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has developed and renovated to standard, he said their administration has developed sports facilities in the country more than any other government in Ghana.
The Vice President disclosed that the hosting right of the All African Games to Ghana is a testimony of the love and commitment of their administration to sports development.
“The All African Games that Ghana was chosen as the host is to tell you that, we are committed to sports development. You will agree with me that Ghana had produced World champions at various sports and period. We cannot afford to allow our glory to die. We will make the All African Games to be another landmark in the history of sports on the continent of Africa,” he affirmed.
The Vice President used the occasion to charge the Black Stars who are currently in Cote d’voire for the CAF Cup of Nations to make the nation proud, stressing that the best is what is good for the country at the moment.
He lamented that the Nation’s Cup trophy has eluded the country for many years noting that, “we have witnessed situation where Ghana was very closed to winning the prestigious trophy but, victory eluded us.
“I know all Ghanaians are behind the Black Stars, I am confident that they will go to the competition with a high spirit that we all are praying for them to be victorious”.
He commended the President of Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Mr. Kwabena Yeboah and his team for their hard work in giving Ghana sports adequate reportage. He told the gathering that Ghana is fully prepared to host the All African Games.
Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) President, Mr. Kwabena Yeboah thanked the Vice President for the support he has personally extended to SWAG members. He said the Vice President had been personally awarding the Best Sports Writer of the Year.
He assured the Vice President that his members will not relent in projecting sports in the country.
