With information flying all around in respect of the proposed nationwide protests by Nigerian youths scheduled for the first ten days in the month of August, it is essential to delve into the potential detrimental impacts that such large-scale demonstrations could have, particularly on the economy of Lagos State. These protests, if allowed to proceed, have the potential to disrupt various sectors of the economy, leading to serious consequences for businesses, citizens, and the overall stability of the state.
First and foremost, it is crucial to acknowledge the commendable efforts that the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, has been making to bring relief to the citizens of the state amidst economic challenges. The government has been proactive in implementing measures to mitigate the effects of the economic downturn and ensure that essential services continue to function effectively. These efforts are aimed at safeguarding the well-being of the people and maintaining a semblance of normalcy in these uncertain times.
However, the proposed protests threaten to undermine these efforts and jeopardize the progress that has been made towards economic recovery. By disrupting business activities, causing uncertainty among investors, and instilling fear among residents, the protests could lead to a further downturn in the economy of Lagos State. The repercussions of such actions could be long-lasting and challenging to overcome, impacting livelihoods and the overall quality of life for many individuals.
Moreover, it is crucial to caution parents about allowing their children to participate in these protests, considering the potential risks and consequences involved. The wounds from previous nationwide protests are still fresh in the memories of many families who suffered loss and pain during those tumultuous times. It is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of our youth and ensure that they are not exposed to situations that could endanger their lives or future prospects.
Additionally, the threat that these protests pose to the democratic system cannot be understated. Any disruption to the democratic process could have far-reaching implications, potentially creating an opening for undemocratic forces to seize power or influence government decisions. The risk of triggering a military intervention must not be underestimated, as history has shown the devastating effects of such actions on the country’s stability and progress.
In light of these concerns, it is imperative that the government takes proactive steps to address the underlying issues that are fueling the discontent behind these planned protests. Tackling the rising cost of living, improving transportation infrastructure, enhancing healthcare access, and ensuring robust security measures are essential aspects that need urgent attention. By responding effectively to these national challenges, the government can help address and allay the fears that are bottled in the bowels of our teeming Youths, whose brains ruminate on daily basis about what the future holds for them.
While turning their backs on the proposed nationwide protests, there are alternative platforms that Nigerian youths can leverage on to voice their grievances to the government. One of such options is to engage in constructive dialogue through town hall meetings or community forums where young people can express their concerns and propose solutions in a peaceful and organized manner.
Another approach could involve drafting petitions and open letters addressed to relevant government officials, calling for specific actions or policy changes to address the issues at hand. Social media platforms could also be utilised to raise awareness, share information, and mobilize support can also be effective in amplifying the voices of the youth and drawing attention to their cause. While not relying solely on the options above, our Youths could choose to participate in advocacy campaigns, join advocacy groups, or collaborate with civil society organizations in order to provide additional channels to enhance their advocacy for change and hold the government accountable.
Ultimately, a combination of peaceful dialogue, robust advocacy and online mobilization can be leveraged on by Nigerian youths to effectively communicate their grievances and push for meaningful reforms without resort to protests which could be hijacked by some miscreants and criminally-minded persons. Our Youths should please recollect the last END-SARS protests which left just blood, tears, destruction and regrets as benefits at the end.
