Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, designer of Nigeria’s national flag has been laid to rest after his family waited in vain for over a year for a state funeral.
Despite assurances from the Federal Government, Akinkunmi’s family revealed they were compelled to proceed with the burial as they could no longer afford the daily N2,000 morgue fee required to keep his body.
The Oyo State Government eventually provided the necessary funds for the burial, stepping in to support the family in honouring the late national icon.
A befitting funeral programme was held in honour of the late Pa Akinwunmi at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan before his remains were buried thereafter at the family house in Elebu area of the Oyo state capital.
The acting Governor of Oyo state, Barrister Bayo Lawal led the government delegation to the burial to support the family of the departed icon.
Born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Pa Akinkunmi is renowned for designing the Nigerian flag in 1958, for which he received a £100 reward. He died on September 4, 2023, aged 87.
