The Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule; and the Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Honourable Rasulu Olusola Idowu; on Sunday, 8 December, 2024, sponsored scholarships awarded to students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo by the institution’s Muslim Alumni (LASUMA), reports thegazellenews.com.
The presentation of the scholarship and other awards came up during the Annual General Meeting of LASUMA which took place at the Old Secretariat mosque, GRA, Ikeja.
The event brought together alumni from various generations to celebrate, shared achievements and foster stronger community ties.
The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education who was the Keynote Speaker at the event, Professor Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye; along with the Guest Lecturers: Prof. Jameelah Yakub, Head of Economics Department at LASU, and Ustaz Muslihu Afisi, a renowned leadership expert and scholar; proffered sustainable alternative solutions to the socio-economic and leadership challenges bedeviling Nigerian institutions, current and past leaders and the entire followers.
The ceremony featured different engaging lineup of activities, including the presentation of Awards of Excellence to Distinguished Alumni and notable leaders for their exceptional contributions to LASUMA and beyond.
Awardees include: Senator Idiat Adebule, Hon. Rasulu Idowu, Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okunneye, Distinguished Prof. Amidu Sanni immediate Vice Chancellor of Fountain University Oshogbo; Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello mni, current Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University Ojo; and a host of others. Families and attendees also enjoyed a variety of delicacies, professional counseling, and fun activities designed for all age groups.
In his keynote address, LASUMA President, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adeyemi Anjorin, Virology Don and immediate past Head of Microbiology Department at the Lagos State University emphasized the importance of alumni collaborations in driving impactful initiatives, stating that, “LASUMA is more than an ordinary alumni body—it is a platform to inspire, support, and uplift one another in alignment with our shared values”.
He explained that although the current Executive Council is just six months in office, it has improved the membership drive geometrically and established an online database for registration, improved annual dues payments, created different committees for all members to serve in including Advisory Council for passionate senior members, initiated scholarships awards for indigent brilliant students and special candidates, began the move to partner with the LASU Muslim Community in expanding the University Central Mosque and students transit lodge, provision of souvenir for all members, monthly/quarterly educational seminar, plan for the annual Ramadan iftar programme and AGM as well as future workshops and professional trainings for all members amongst others.
He encouraged all LASUMA members to ensure their profiles are captured on the newly launched LASUMA website at- www.lasuma.org.ng.”
The event also highlighted LASUMA’s ongoing efforts to support charitable causes and community development, reflecting the organization’s commitment to fostering a legacy of excellence and service. Attendees expressed their excitement about the event’s success.
One participant remarked, “Today’s event was truly inspiring—seeing alumni from different generations come together with such passion and unity is a testament to the strength of the LASUMA community.”
The LASUMA 2024 AGM and Awards Ceremony was made possible by the generous contributions of its members and supporters. The alumni body extended its gratitude to all who donated and participated, ensuring the event’s success.
