The Lagos State House of Assembly, during its plenary session held on Monday, 6 January, 2025, passed a bill aimed at unifying and amending all laws related to local government administration in the state.
The session, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, saw the presentation of the bill by Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development.
Hon. Okanlawon explained that the Bill seeks to establish a comprehensive framework for the local government system in Lagos State, consolidating existing laws to ensure better governance and administration.
He further noted that the bill incorporates consequential provisions arising from recent constitutional amendments and other relevant acts of the National Assembly that directly impact local government operations in the state.
The House adopted the committee’s recommendations, resolving to proceed with the Bill’s implementation.
The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to transmit the resolution to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his assent.
This legislative effort underscores the Lagos State House of Assembly’s commitment to strengthening local governance and ensuring compliance with recent constitutional and legislative changes.
