The Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon Wahab Alawiye-King, has stated that the need to make the state primary education sector conform with present international standard was the main reason the Board is reviewing some of its policies, The Gazelle News.com can report.
Alawiye-King, The Gazelle News.com reports, spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, 4 March, 2020, at a capacity development workshop organised by the Board. The workshop was organised management staff of the Board, Secretaries of Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs), members of the state Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and other stakeholders in the primary education sector in the state.
The Gazelle News.com reports further that the workshop which was aimed at analysing new trends in the education sector, particularly the primary education genre, was held at White House Hotel, Ikeja.
Addressing the participants at the retreat, Alawiye-King noted that the workshop became essential so as keep abreast with latest development and new trends in the basic education sector and also exchange ideas and rub minds on issues of common interest.
He also stated that the retreat provided avenue to proffer solutions to some challenges encountered in the sector since the assumption of office of the present administration especially in the areas of the Ekoexcel inititiative and the activities of the quality assurance officers.
According to him, “This workshop is designed to address some of the challenges and issues raised by our basic education quality assurance officers. It’s a practical and technical approach as well as a response to some of the challenges raised during inspections”.
Speaking on the EKOEXCEL programme, Alawiye-King stated that the programme which had been widely commended should be reexamined to identify some grey areas in a more critical and holistic manner such that areas that need amendment and review would be given due attention promptly.
On the Home Grown Feeding Programme, he noted that the Education Quality Assurance officers of the Board during their tour of schools has made some recommendation to the concerned authorities, adding that the workshop will further avail the stakeholders an opportunity to rub minds collectively and thinker a way forward.
The Board Chairman also disclosed that some of other issues to be addressed at the retreat include ways in which sensitisation and precautionary measures will be taken in public primary school about the Coronavirus.
He stated that provisions had already been made across government-owned primary schools for personal hygiene and other necessary measures that will help prevent the disease from getting to schools and the pupils.
Alawiye-King reiterated that continuous workshops is the best way to grow as issues will be easily identified and addressed immediately so that the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration in which Education is one of the focal points can be achieved.
Stakeholders at the Workshop include: Permanent Board Members of LASUBEB, the Board Secretary, Education Secretaries, Representatives of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) Lagos State Chapter, Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (APSHON) Lagos State branch amongst others.
