All the 360 members of the House of Representatives have donated their 100% salaries for March and April for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, The Gazelle News.com reports.
This was announced on Tuesday, 31 March, 2020 by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.
The Speaker stated that the donation is independent of individual efforts by the Lawmakers to alleviate the effects of the pandemic in their respective constituencies.
Rt. Hon Gbajabiamila stated further that he has directed the Clerk of the House of Representatives to transfer the salaries of the Reps members for the months of March and April directly to the accounts of the National Relief Fund.
The Speaker stated that the donation would be used to take care of medical professionals and health workers working on the field to contain the pandemic.
He warned that the House would perform its oversight functions on monitoring the spending and distribution of donated money and relief materials respectively.
Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to provide cash grants to all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria to alleviate the negative impacts of the pandemic in their respective councils.
