As part of his continuous effort to reduce unemployment, a lawmaker in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu has inducted some youths for a digital training programme in conjunction with the Lagos State Government.
Speaking at the induction programme on Friday, 13 January, 2023, at GOY Constituency office, Yishawu, who represents Eti-Osa State Constituency 2 in the Assembly, disclosed that the training would provide jobs for the youth and make them employers of labour.
The lawmaker promised that half of the youths that will participate in the training will get job placements.
According to him, we have sustained all the programmes we have been doing from the inception of my administration.
Yishawu stressed that the selected beneficiaries were found worthy and capable, and urged them to devote their time and energy to complete the training.
“Though, this training is free, you need some level of commitment. I won’t call it intellectual capacity, but you need to learn,” he said.
Yishawu, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, said that his programmes are tailored towards infusing knowledge and uplifting the livelihood of the residents of Eti-Osa State Constituency 2.
“We have done programmes to infuse knowledge and uplift the livelihood of our constituents. Apart from my duty in the Lagos State House of Assembly, we have a representation which requires us to ensure that our constituents feel the dividends of democracy.
“We also decided to upscale representation by empowering our youths with digital training. It is tough because we want to start it a year ago, but we are starting now because we wanted to partner the Lagos State Government,” he said.
Mrs.Teju Abisoye, Executive Secretary, of Lagos State Trust Fund (LSETF) described Yishawu as a man that is passionate about youths.
“He’s thinking about the youths and how they will get employment. He is not only teaching them how to fish, but he is teaching them how to fish in foreign currency. The opportunity is there and it is up to the young people to make sure that they take advantage of it,” she noted.
Abisoye therefore, appealed to the beneficiaries to make use of the opportunity provided by the lawmaker.
“People have stayed for years and even borrowed money to do this training, so I hope the beneficiaries will make use of this opportunity,” she said.
In the same vein, some the beneficiaries expressed their gladness with the programme and promised to make use of the opportunity given to them.
A 300-level student of History and International Relations, Catherine Ameh said she counted it as a great opportunity since the focus has shifted to digital business in the 21st Century.
Another beneficiary, Miss Ogunsanya Oriyomi said that the training will cost about N450,000 if they wanted to do it outside.
“It is not everyone that will do white collar job. The world is digitalized now, so the youths need to key into the opportunity provided for them. With this, we appreciate Hon. Yishawu for doing this for us,” she said.
