The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has condemned the ill-treatment of members of Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, during their recent visit to Libya.
In a press release issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio expressed his outrage at the actions of Libyan authorities, characterizing the incident as a “stark reminder of the disregard for human dignity and the lack of respect for international norms.”
Akpabio emphasized that such treatment is not only unacceptable but also represents a breach of the principles of fair play and sportsmanship that are fundamental to international football competitions.
He stated, “As the President of the Senate, I stand in solidarity with the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the entire Nigerian football community in condemning this unjust treatment.”
The Senate President assured that the Nigerian Senate will closely monitor the situation to ensure the rights and dignity of its citizens are upheld.
“We will not tolerate any form of mistreatment or disrespect towards our nationals, regardless of the circumstances,” he reiterated.
Akpabio’s statement also called for a thorough investigation by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
He demanded “appropriate sanctions to be meted out against those involved” in the mistreatment of the players.
Furthermore, the Senate President urged the Libyan authorities to take immediate action to investigate the incident, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable to prevent future occurrences.
He called on the international football community to join Nigeria in condemning this behavior and supporting the demand for justice.
