The Director-General, Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC), Mrs. Oluwabunmi Amao has stated the relevance of the Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) that was held in 1977 in the country in this present time.
The DG said this at the unveiling of the Centre’s Black and African Hall of Fame, held on Tuesday, 24 August, 2021 in Abuja.
The former Commissioner explained that the festival is relevant now that history is being returned back to the school’s curriculum.
She further explained that the knowledge of such festival will enrich the students with the country’s historical antecedents.
“Honestly, FESTAC 77 is more relevant now as history is being returned to school’s curriculum.
“The reason is because it would aid the students’ proper understanding of the country’s historical antecedents.
“The knowledge of FESTAC 77 is key as it enables the students to know who were around about that time and those who performed,” she explained.
Speaking earlier, the Minister of Information, Arts and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed described the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC)’s Black and African Hall of Fame as a preservation of Nigeria’s arts and culture.
The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ifeoma Anyanwu, made this known at the unveiling held on Tuesday, 24 August, 2021 in Abuja.
Mohammed, who commended the Director-General of the Centre, Mrs Oluwabunmi Amao, noted that the preservation would prevent the country’s cultural inclinations from going into extinction.
“I am marveled because what has been done here will be able to preserve Arts and culture so that they don’t go into extinction and that history will be there for the younger generation who are coming up to come and see how Nigeria evolved, Africa evolved and see the great heroes of Africa, great heroes of Nigeria in their own country and so on and so forth.
“My vision is to see another FESTAC 77. I also look forward to the recreation of another FESTAC in years to come,” the Minister said.
