There have been torrential rainfall in Lagos in the past one week but the one that poured down on Thursday, 15 June, 2023, it was the heaviest of the lot.
It left devastating effects on the various communities and households in Lagos with properties worth millions of Naira destroyed.
The greatest tragedy however was the loss of lives and the Agege community appeared to be the highest hit.
According to reports, more than eight people were feared killed on Thursday, 15 June, 2023 in Agege alone as a result of the flood that swept through the Abattoir area of the community.
The most pathetic story however was the tragic case of a nursing mother who missed her step while trying to back her child and fell into the flood. While both mother and child were being swept away, a resident tried in vain to rescue them but the three of them were swept away by the strong current of the flood.
“The woman was trying to back her child but missed her step and fell into the flood with the child. A man named Umar, jumped into the flood to save them, but the three were swept away. Up till today, we’ve not found them,” a resident narrated to thegazellenews.com.
As at the time of writing this report, neighbours and co-tenants of Umar are still searching for him.
