The Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King has charged relevant authorities in charge of school maintenance to assume responsibility for school property and infrastructure and develop a special maintenance strategy that would guarantee the durability of school buildings and infrastructure.
Alawiye-King, gave the charge while commissioning a new school building, Ayanleye Memorial Primary School in Ifako Ijaiye area of the State on Monday.
The Chairman noted that the community, parents and teachers, need to work together and take ownership of schools within their domain and not wait for it to crumble before it is fixed.
He said that the attention being paid to school infrastructure under the present administration in the state was as a result of the determination of the Government to bridge identified infrastructural gaps and also work towards striking a balance in other areas of competing needs.
Alawiye-King attributed the dilapidated state of some schools across the State to negligence and lackadaisical attitude on the part of some stakeholders who ordinarily should have assumed ownership of those schools.
The commission of the new school building according to him was to ensure that Lagos State pupils have a conducive teaching and learning environment.
While advising the management of the newly inaugurated school to ensure that other facilities put in place within the school are well taken care of, the Chairman pleaded with Lagosians to be the ears and eyes of the government in their various domains and prevent willful damage to government owned properties.
The Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Oloruntoba Grace, commended the state government and Chairman LASUBEB for the improved learning environment created for the pupils.
She underscored the role which conducive learning atmosphere plays in the learning, stressing that for young people to meet future challenges, the ongoing reforms in the State education system becomes indispensable.
“Having a conducive environment is one of the key elements for learners to successfully perform well this is why the gesture of the State Government must be commended for making the welfare of Pupils and teachers in Lagos State top priority,” she reiterated..
