The Vice-Chairman of Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Area of Lagos state, Prince Usman Akanbi Hamzat, has donated copies of a book titled “The making of the Nigerian Flagship” to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) as part of his contribution to the development of journalism practice in Nigeria.
The 600-page book, which was authored by veteran Nigerian journalists: Aaron Ukodie and Seun Ogunseitan, tells the story behind the creation of daily newspaper, The Guardian, as well as its founding Publisher, Alex Uruemu Ibru.
Provost of the institution, Mr Gbenga Adefaye and Deputy Provost, Dr Dele Omojuyigbe received copies of the book on behalf of NIJ.
The Provost expressed his profound gratitude to the Vice Chairman. He said that the authors of the book did well by putting together the account of the past days in Journalism practice at the Guardian. He said that he looked forward to when Vanguard newspaper would take the next turn. Adefaye observed that the youths of today do not read but rather prefer to ping and use instagram. However, he noted that a gesture such as this book donation could help spur the youths to see the Importance of reading.
Prince Hamzat hinted that he desires a positive change in Journalism practice in the country and so, he would like to promote the institution and make it the learning point for communication students.
