Victoria Ogunremi, a Nigerian-American woman has displayed a rare act of honesty and kindness after returning $5,700 she discovered in a toilet at her workplace in New Jersey, U.S.A.
Ogunremi shared her story in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, 27 January, 2025. She said her decision to return the money stemmed from deep concern for its rightful owner.
“The thought of the pain or trauma it could cause inspired me,” she said. “I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is the key virtue I cherish.”
After locating the owner, Ogunremi informed the management of her organisation. Her colleagues lauded her integrity, with many expressing that they were not surprised by her selfless act. “The management was very pleased and proud of me. The owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with praises,” she recounted. “They told me that it could only have been an act of kindness by a woman with the fear of God to do something like this.”
Reflecting on her values, Ogunremi credited her late father for instilling strong moral principles in her upbringing.
“He taught us never to take what does not belong to us. Such principles have guided me throughout my life, knowing that honesty is a principle I hope to instill in my children and grandchildren.”
She emphasised the importance of integrity, regardless of circumstances.
“Whether someone is watching or not, doing the right thing matters. A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is golden.”
Encouraging others to uphold honesty, she added: “No matter how tough your situation is, always return what does not belong to you. Doing the right thing brings rewards far greater than anything material.”
