We sleep with our eyes open; Gone are those days when we walk freely without securities.
Gone are those days when the youth are the hope of the Nation. Gone are the days when we vote for who we want and not who gains power through manipulation.
Now in our society, the youth believe being a fraudster is a way to to earn a living, rather than the days the young children dream to become doctors, and lawyers, accountants, and so on.
Now Kidnapping has become a lucrative business, killing cases gets higher by the day. Now the mind is used to hearing people get killed and one no longer feel very bad like it used to be in those days when those things were abnormalities.
We begin to ask: what led to this act? Why do the abnormalities of yesterday become the normalities of today? In subsequent paragraphs emphasis will be made on how Bad governance, Unemployment, and Poverty played a huge role in making abnormal things become normal.
First off, Bad governance is one of those factors affecting the society. They say when the head is bad, it affects the whole body.
Government is a machinery established by the state, to organize the state, manage the affairs of the state and administer functions and duties of the state. When the government fails in its duties it really affects the people. How? Unemployment rate in Nigeria for instance is so high that most graduates believe that leaving the country is a way for them to get a job. Those that work in the country do not get a good pay, most of them accept the job so at least they can put food on their table. In a country where school dropouts make more money, live in a conducive environment with a good family, how then do we encourage the little ones that education is the best legacy? While some people in government, loot public funds and use it to make wealth for themselves. If the government spends these money on infrastructure, building more companies, and assisting little businesses to grow, the country; the environment would have been a better place to live, we will not have people who will wake up and say they want to steal for a living, or make other people cry to live. If the government do their best, then we will not have people justifying their criminal acts by hiding under the shadow of bad governance.
Moving on, Poverty has contributed so much to the abnormalities in the environment. You may train a child in the way of the lord and at the end the child may have to do things in his or her way, when life gets tougher than they can comprehend. We have seen people come from a well cultured home but when things get tougher. If they could not afford to eat three square meals, not to talk about affording other bills, they end up doing things they are not cultured to do or they do not want to do.
I remember the day I met a lady, her dressing obviously shows that she is a prostitute. I did not mind her dressing, I greeted her then we started talking from there, I observed this girl had very good manners despite being dressed that way( like a prostitute). At the end I asked her what brought you to doing this, and she replied and I quote “how do I feed if I do not do this?”.
Then I told her she would have done something better, the fact that you do not have enough money does not mean you should turn bad. she asked me if I had a better job for her, obviously I do not have any for her but I promised her I will do my best to get her a better job.
In a country of over 200 million people; Nigeria for instance, not more than 5 million people can afford to spend $10 a day, which shows the level of poverty in the country. I told a friend who is a preacher, that preaching is good, but what do you tell an hungry man when you do not have food for him. I have been to rural areas where during the day someone can come with a knife or gun to take your belongings away from you and you cannot report to the police.
Not just that, poverty makes some people steal and do other bad things. Some students had to work while schooling, some parents cannot afford to pay their children school fees, at the end they become what they do not want to become.
Education is the key but it is not free. Do you break the door because you do not have a key?
In conclusion, according to Tom G Palmer, “Guardians are necessary for children and abnormal adults, because they cannot make responsible choices for themselves. now we sleep with our eyes opened, corruption everywhere just to make money. Everyone wants to feel among they do not care if they hurt anyone.
The fact that the society cares about who is rich and who is ready to spend on them without caring about how they make such money. Now stealing is seen as being smart, prostitution is no longer seen as something bad but as using what you have to get what you need. Even when some guys know they could not afford an IPhone, they end up doing all it takes to get it; all of these just because people no longer care. Those things that we see as abnormalities have now become normalities.
