The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assenting to the South-South Development Commission Bill.
PANDEV in statement issued by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, also lauded the National Assembly for its swift and diligent passage of the legislation
“This landmark decision reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to ensuring equitable regional development across Nigeria,” the statement said.
According to PANDEF, the establishment of the South-South Development Commission is a strategic move to address the region’s distinct social, environmental and developmental challenges.
The forum further stressed the need for competent and ethical leadership in the commission.
“We urge President Tinubu to appoint only individuals with proven competence, relevant expertise, and unwavering integrity,” PANDEF said.
Addressing pressing regional concerns, PANDEF called for urgent action on environmental restoration and infrastructural development.The negative impact of oil and gas activities, coupled with severe infrastructural deficits, poses serious threats to our people. These issues must be prioritised in the commission’s agenda to improve the quality of life in our communities,” the forum said.
PANDEF also called for the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State, following the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the deputy governor, and State Assembly.
“We sincerely appeal to President Tinubu to facilitate the immediate reinstatement of the affected officials to uphold democratic governance in Rivers State,” the statement added.
