Umoru Street in the heart of Akala community in Odiolowo/Ojuwoye Local Development Area of Lagos State was the centre of attraction on Thursday, 28 September, 2023.
It was the birth of the Trash-to-gas Initiative which was brought to residents of the council area anchored on a partnership between the Rasaq Ajala led administration at Odiolowo/Ojuwoye LCDA and the Smart Gas group led by proven entrepreneur, Dr Yinka Opeke.
According to the duo of Ajala and Opeke, the Trash-to-gas Initiative has tripartite aim: to clean the environment and make it become greener; to turn waste into wealth and to empower the people and encourage them to use gas rather than firewood and charcoal which is injurious to their health.
“A chance meeting with Honourable Ajala on a flight gave birth to this initiative and I want to commend the Odiolowo/Ojuwoye LCDA boss for taking up the mantle to birth this Initiative here.
“Honestly, I was a bit apprehensive coming to this place but my fears have been allayed iwrh the wonderful reception and acceptance by the residents and the security put in place by Honourable Ajala was top notch,” Dr Opeke said.
“We need to encourage people to use gas. Using firewood and charcoal is injurious to their health, and the need to turn waste into wealth is paramount in our priority,” she said.
Honourable Ajala commended the Opeke led Smart Gas for the Initiative noting that it will go a long way in making the environment cleaner and greener.
“We also intend to empower the people with the free distribution of smart gas to about 370 residents. While we’re doing this, we’re also turning waste into wealth that’s why you see the beneficiaries of the free smart gas distribution exchanging their trash for the gas cylinders,” he said.
About 370 residents exchange their trash for the smart gas cylinders and trucks from the state Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and their officials were on hand to evacuate the trash.
The highlight of the event was the exchange of trash by residents who gleefully displayed their free smart gas cylinders.
“We’re looking at extending this programme to other council areas in Lagos but we’ll also like to partner with government agencies and individuals of likeminds,” she said.
