Bonu Solomon’s Rising Profile: Why Lagos Lawmaker Is Loved By His People; Speaks On Badagry As State Food Basket
Without a doubt, one of the most dynamic lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly at the moment is Hon. Bonu Solomon Sannu, the lawmaker representing the people of Badagry State Constituency I.
Within a year of his first term, he has proven that he is one of the most pro-active legislators the state can boast of. This is why his people do not joke with him. He has exceeded expectations, bringing to their door steps the dividends of democracy in a way they haven’t quite experienced before.
Though his primary responsibility is to influence laws that will provide critical social amenities for his people, Honourable Bonu Solomon has also taken it upon himself to personally make available provisions that are outside his core responsibility, which is to help his people enact laws that will address their concerns. And his people all agree that he has done tremendously well for them, and they simply cannot just thank him enough.
At the 9th Stakeholders’ Meeting held across the state, there was a huge turn out of people who trooped to meet with their representative and engage him in meaningful and effective conversation on how to move the constituency forward. At the meeting, the respected lawmaker urged that top priority should be given to food security in the state, saying that this is the only way the future of the state could be guaranteed.
Speaking at the secretariat of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Iworo, Badagry, Lagos, Hon. Sannu, identified food insecurity as a multi-faceted challenge requiring the efforts of the government and the people to resolve.
This year’s stakeholders’ meeting is the ninth in the series and it has the theme: ‘Ensuring Food Security for Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home-Grown Farming’.
The very likeable and popular Hon Sannu stated that the issue of food security in line with the United Nation’s sustainable development goals of eradication of poverty is paramount to the lawmakers in the assembly.
He said, “We at the Lagos State House of Assembly are committed to making Lagos a food producing state and not just a consuming state in the agriculture value chain to tackle the present-day reality of food insufficiency.
“Our commitment is exemplified through transformational laws and policy supervision in the agricultural sector,” he said, noting that with the collaboration of the Assembly, the government of the state has made giant strides in the agriculture sector”.
He listed some of the agricultural initiatives to include the setting up of the 34-hectare Ikorodu Fishfarm Estate which has the capacity to produce and process 10,000 tons of fish per year partnering with 400 fish farmers in the State.
He mentioned the AGRIC-YES programme and “the Oke-Aro and Gberigbe Pig Farm Estates that currently partners with 1,200 farmers and have the capacity of housing and processing 88,000 mature pigs per annum.
“It is important to reiterate that, on our part as lawmakers, we have also created an enabling environment for farming activities to thrive in the state, particularly through the passage of anti-open grazing of livestock Law in September, 2021,” he said.
Offering some solution to the problem, the very amiable and intelligent lawmaker said to achieve food sufficiency, farming capacity needs to be widened while residents should consider animal husbandry.
Stakeholders at the event emphasised that Badagry, being a rural community, has the capacity to produce food for the state and they urged the state government to give necessary assistance to farmers in the area so that they can work optimally and produce food for the state.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, market men and women, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), youths, students and residents of the constituency.
LG Bill: Don’t Destroy Tinubu’s Legacy, CSO Tells Lagos Assembly; We Won’t Go Against The People – Lawmaker
A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of Lagos People’s Assembly (LPA) has warned the state House of Assembly not to destroy the legacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he holds dear to his heart regarding the creation of local government.
The group who stromed the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday, 24 October, 2024, to protest the high handedness of Mudashiru Obasa led House said it won’t allow a group of people to rubbish Tinubu’s legacy, nor take over the power of the councillors at the grassroots level
The Co-covener, Kola Abe, who spoke on behalf of the group, said it’s unbecoming that the House will ursurp the role of councillors by suspending a local government chairman.
The group it is protesting against a contentious bill that seeks to override the autonomy granted to the 774 local governments in Nigeria by the Supreme Court.
Abe said, “we want to sound a note of warning to the Lagos State House of Assembly not to take over the role of councillors by suspending a local government chairman. The struggle for local government creation in Lagos state started 21 years ago. You will recall that our pathfinder, President Bola Tinubu, started this struggle for more local government. We also heard that the Lagos Assembly is planning to merge the LCDAs and reduce everything to 20. If God has given our leader an initiative to do this years ago, why is Lagos Assembly trying to destroy the legacy of our leader?
“We will not allow that to happen. We’re also surprised that the House is taking over the role of councillors when the Supreme Court has given them autonomy”.
Also, speaking, Sĥina Loremikan of Campaign Against Impunity said the group has submitted its position that the House should not tamper with the local governments nor pass any motion or resolution that will undermine it.
Responding , Hon. Lukman Olumoh, representing Ajeromi Ifelodun State Constituency I, who spoke on behalf of the Speaker, assured the protesters that the House will not do anything against the will of the people.
While admitting the gains of the LCDAs over the years, he said that they are the creation of the Assembly, adding that it won’t do anything that will reverse the gains.
It will be recalled that the Apex Court in a landmark ruling has given the local governments in Nigeria financial autonomy to free it from the stranglehold of governors which had hitherto tied them to the apron strings in the guise of joint account.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has initiated a bill to override the Supreme Court judgement. During the last public hearing of the bill, a former Senator, Musiliu Obanikoro, Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Rasak Ajala, among other stakeholders have spoken against the bill.
They argue that such should be subjected to a thorough scrutiny and not done without the input of all the stakeholders. Obanikoro was particularly piqued that the House is having such a bill without the input of the ruling political party.
